Chapter Four

The next morning they got an early start on their journey. Rall pulled Mark to him to let him ride his back, but Shaara stepped over, taking his wrist firmly. “No, sweet one. I will take Goldi on my back. You need to rest.” He glanced down at Mark. “He needs to be with me today. Both you and Kronar need to follow me closely. There is danger in the area, with many sightings of the figgers and cuctons last night and early this morning, which is why I came out to meet you. We will move quickly and silently. No speaking.”

He glanced at Rall to make sure he understood, and then over at Kronar, who seemed to be a bit shy this morning. The king smiled at Kronar and grazed his cheek with his hand. They had spent the entire night alone and only returned after they had eaten breakfast. Mark hoped for Kronar’s sake the king had been able display his love for him. Mark felt protective of both Rall and Kronar, a fact which was probably crazy considering they both towered over him and outweighed him by a good forty or fifty pounds, but he couldn’t help it.

The king morphed into his bear and lay down for Mark to climb onto him. Mark could see the other men shifting all around him—and it was one hell of an amazing sight. He lay flat out on the king’s broad back, unable to get his legs wrapped around him, and held onto two fistfuls of the loose, thick skin around his neck. Once Shaara was sure that Mark was firmly situated, they began to run.

Right away, Mark had trouble. Aside from feeling like he had one hell of a hangover, which was probably the aftereffects of the bite the king had given him, his wrist was still too weak to allow him a really tight grip. He bounced around all over the bear’s back. He tried to gain a purchase with his toes, but the bear was moving too quickly and was throwing him around too much. He tried to signal that he was having trouble. The king even turned his head to glance back at him, but ignored his panicky arm waving and kept going. Angry, Mark let go and rolled off onto the ground.

Before he could stop himself, Rall, who’d been following closely at the king’s order, stepped hard on Mark’s stomach, completely crushing the breath out of him. Mark rolled again, trying to get out of the way before Rall came crashing down on top of him in his effort not to put his full weight on him. Mark was snatched up in Kronar’s mouth, his huge teeth fastening painfully in the nape of Mark’s neck. Stunned, Mark ripped himself away from Kronar’s teeth and landed on the trail on his back, trying desperately to breathe. Darkness began to seep into his eyes around the edges, and Kronar’s face loomed over him, worried and shouting something.
